The Cardinals began the process Monday of trimming the roster down to 53, including releasing veteran cornerback Josh Jackson.
Linebacker Joe Walker and offensive lineman Koda Martin were also cut.
Jackson’s release is likely a prelude to a move to sign or trade for a cornerback.
The team still needs to make 24 roster moves before 1pm on Tuesday to reach the 53man limit. They still have 78 on the roster, but tight end Bernhard Seikovits is on international waivers. DeAndre Hopkins going on the suspended list will be one of the moves.
Veteran linebacker Devon Kennard confirmed reports that he was going to be released, saying it was a “cold world”. The Cardinals have a full outfield, with the progress of 2021 draft pick Victor Dimukeje as well as three 2022 draft picks: Cameron Thomas, Myjai Sanders and Jesse Luketa. Kennard has been solid against the run, but wouldn’t be used much in the passing game.
Pro Football Network reported that cornerback Jace Whittaker and wide receiver Andre Baccellia were set to be released, but they have not been officially announced. Both spent most of last season on the practice squad and could return.
Jackson, a former secondround pick of the Packers in 2018, was signed in the offseason following the tragic death of Jeff Gladney in a car accident. The hope was that he could push for a topthree job, but after a strong start to the field Jackson finished.
The Cardinals need to add to the cornerback room. Byron Murphy will start. Antonio Hamilton is No. 2, though he suffered an undisclosed injury late in the field and his status for Week 1 is uncertain. Marco Wilson, who entered the field as No. 2 before being overtaken by Hamilton, is No. 2 for now.
Once Whittaker is out, that leaves rookie Christian Matthew as the only other cornerback on the roster, though starback Isaiah Simmons and safety Jalen Thompson can play nickel corner if needed.
